Dental Crowns and Bridges

The process of adding crowns and bridges is usually completed in two appointments. After anesthesia, the teeth are prepared for the permanent bride/crown and an impression is taken after the tooth is prepared. Since this impression is very important, your dentist might have to take more than one impression. This impression is then used to make your crown. While the permanent crown is being fabricated a temporary bridge/ crown are placed on the teeth for protection. The permanent bridge/crown will not resemble the temporary. Since the temporary bridge/crown is meant to be easily removed by your dentist, care must be taken in order to not dislodge it before the final restoration is placed.

Once your bridge or crown has been added, do not chew sticky foods like caramel or chewing gum. When flossing, do not pop it out through the contact between the teeth, and instead pull the floss out the side. With a temporary bridge, you will not be able to floss between the teeth. In the event that your temporary bridge/crown comes off, put some Fixodent™ inside it and place it back on your teeth. Call our office during regular office hours and we will re-install it. Under no circumstances take your temporary bridge/crown off, even if you have discomfort. Without a temporary bridge, the teeth will not be held in place and this movement can cause your bridge not to fit. If that happens you will have to buy a new bridge. If you feel that your bite is not balanced, make an appointment so that we can adjust it for you.

After the procedure, your gums might be sore. Warm salt water rinses will help speed healing. There may be some sensitivity to hot or cold. This is not out of the ordinary since temporaries do not have an accurate fit of the prepared teeth.

Once you have your new bridge, you will need to brush and floss. You will need special floss and other aids to clean all areas properly.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call our office. Your comfort is our priority!
