What is Endodontics?

Endodontics is a field of dentistry that treats the root canal system. When decay extends to the pulp or the nerve inside the tooth, the person almost always experiences spontaneous throbbing pain. The pain increases at night and is aggravated by cold & sweet foods. The dental endodontics relieves the pain and pressure symptoms by treating the root canal system which houses the tooth nerve or pulp.

How is a root canal performed?

First, the area is numbed with anesthesia. Then the tooth is drilled into in order to access the infected nerve. The nerve is then removed and the canals are thoroughly cleaned and filled with a bioinert material.

After a root canal treatment, the tooth will be prone to cracking and fracture due to the infection as well as the process of cleaning the tooth. Sometimes color changes can also be seen in the tooth. The doctor will recommend a crown in order to protect the tooth from fracturing. In cases where much of the tooth structure is lost, a post will be placed in order to better secure the crown. If you have any questions, please call our office for more information
